In addition to using real ponies at the Prince of Wales School, we have a mechanical horse we affectionately call “JASPER”.

JASPER is used in the winter and during bad weather, providing important continuity of therapy for the children. He was developed in conjunction with Brunel University, Institute of Bioengineering, The Riding for the Disabled Association and ACPRD Romulus Technology Limited.

“JASPER” or the Brunel Active Balance Saddle (BABS) system, faithfully reproduces the three-dimensional rotations of the horse at walk, as researched by Kunzle and Baumann (1979).
He accurately mimics the rotation of the normal human ambulatory gait to simulate
able-bodied walking.
This develops and improves physical and functional symmetry and control of the seat, torso and limbs. It stimulates the nervous and muscular system and encourages the requirement to balance.

In addition, JASPER allows exercises for the correction of asymmetry and the development of good postural habits and riding technique.
By using JASPER we can maintain regular Hippotherapy or Therapeutic riding - with minimum assistance.
We are very lucky indeed to have such a great asset as JASPER. Because of him, the children receive the benefit of therapy all year round.
The children are always very keen and enthusiastic. They play games whilst riding that incorporate exercises and therapy in a fun way.
JASPER = GREAT THERAPY & GREAT FUN!

Operated by unpaid volunteers, JASPER is paid for and maintained by the Stella Hayward RDA and friends.
In 2004, the Father of a Trustee made special steps for Jasper (see photo below). The materials were purchased from a £50 donation received from a proud parent.
The steps were specifically designed to meet the limited step-up capability of the disabled children.

Thank you.
